Our History

Founded in 1995 by educators, community advocates, and artists, L.A.C.E.R. has at its core, the belief that all students in underesourced communities within the Los Angeles public school system should have access to quality education, free homework assistance, arts programming, athletic activities, and graduation preparation that is on par with other students who are more privileged.

In support of this philosophy, L.A.C.E.R.’s programming takes place at the eight Los Angeles schools served (Bancroft, Irving, King, and Le Conte middle schools and Marshall, North Hollywood, Fairfax, and Hollywood high schools). Since all programming occurs at the school sites and is free of charge, it alleviates transportation and financial barriers.

Our Goals

For over 28 years the award-winning L.A.C.E.R. Afterschool Programs have provided underserved middle and high school students in Los Angeles with free arts, athletics, and academic activities after school. By allowing young people the opportunity to expand their learning, improve their skills and develop new ones in a safe, supportive setting, L.A.C.E.R. fosters scholastic achievement, self-confidence, and good citizenship.

Our Strategy

Programs are designed with input from the students, teachers and school administrators, and provide educational opportunities increasingly unavailable during the regular school day. All L.A.C.E.R. classes are aligned with Common Core Standards and/or  Visual and Performing Arts Standards as well as Quality Standards for Expanded Learning. L.A.C.E.R. offers four key content areas: Academics, Arts, Athletics and College and Career Prep. LACER staff are trained to help guide the students during each phase of their adolescent development. LACER uses the various programs to help students gain social and emotional skills. The focus on acquiring transferrable skills helps students thrive throughout middle, high school and beyond.
